Aspen hosts third UKZN Legal Workshop

An Aspen Holdings Initiative

Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s vision to make a difference in the lives of others, in 2016 the Aspen Group Legal Team, motivated by Business – Community – Education as a co-operative, piloted the week-long University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Legal Workshop sponsored by Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited.

This is a community initiative in vocational skills development and promotion of the legal profession among students from the UKZN’s law faculty. The initiative at Aspen’s headquarters takes place during the University’s July holidays and coincides with the month of Nelson Mandela’s birth.

Such was the success of the pilot Workshop, that Aspen Group Legal has now provided the event for the third consecutive year. Following various forms of communication, including a visit to the law lecture at the University, interested third and fourth year law students are encouraged to submit online applications to attend the Workshop. Candidates are selected by a committee based on various selection criterion, with preference given to women of colour.

The Workshop for this year’s 27 deserving students comprised various interactive and practical sessions, presented by Aspen professionals and executives, and covered a range of topics relevant to the legal profession including contract drafting skills, intellectual property, legal career pathing, CV preparation and interview skills as well as key success factors for working in a corporate environment.

One student described the Workshop as “life changing”, another expressed that “the workshop completely changed my perspective on the legal profession, it provided so much value to me.”

Aspen Group Legal is proud to once again have made this valuable contribution towards the community and future lawyers.
